About

The Government General Hospital, Madras Medical College, Chennai-600 003, India, is a 2500 bed multi-speciality tertiary care teaching hospital in India.  The College has extensive undergraduate and post graduate teaching programmes.  The medical college comprises of many graduate courses in Medicine, Surgery, Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy, Laboratory Technology, and Medical Records Science, and 10 postgraduate medical diploma courses, 23 postgraduate degree courses, and 10 higher specialty courses. The post graduate training courses include the following specialities and super-specialities: Internal Medicine, General Surgery, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Paediatrics, Psychiatry, Chest Medicine, Endocrinology, Anaesthesiology, ENT, Ophthalmology, Urology, Cardiology and Cardiothoracic surgery, Gastroenterology, Surgical gastroenterology, Nephrology, Haematology, Preventive Medicine, Plastic surgery, Neurology and Neurosurgery, Orthopaedics and Traumatology,  Radiation oncology, Medical oncology  and Radio diagnosis.           
The first X-ray outfit was obtained for the general hospital in the year 1900 almost five years after W.C. Roentgen made his famous discovery, the first in South East Asia.  The Barnard Institute of Radiology was started way back on March 26th 1934.  The Department is equipped with one Siemens 1.5 T MRI,  One 64 slice Philips CT and other Toshiba and GE spiral CT machines(4), X-ray machines from 300- 1000 mAs, USG machines with Doppler, fluoroscopy and Angio suite and Mammography.  The Department of Nuclear Medicine is a part of the institute equipped with a Gamma camera and a separate thyroid uptake machine and a thyroid scan machine.  It also has a separate lab for doing radio-immunological assays (RIA).  It is headed by a Professor and in addition has a separate Biochemist and Technician.  The Institute of Child Health and The Institute of Gynaecology and Obstetrics are part of Madras Medical College with radiology units.
The Radiology department has 55 staff.  This includes 24 staff radiologists (DMRD, DNB or MD) including 6 professors, 10 assistant and associate professors, 29 post-graduate students, three radiology physicists one in the grade of professor and two assistant professors, 44 radiographers including 3 instructors, 6 secretarial and office staff, 8 nursing staff and 06 attenders and sweepers.
The institute has a regular teaching programme and trains 5 MD RD (Master degree in radio diagnosis) and 8 DMRD (diploma in medical Radio diagnosis) residents each year, the courses being affiliated to the Dr. MGR Medical University.
